James G. Connell, III

James G. Connell, III practices criminal law in state and federal courts in Virginia. Mr. Connell is committed to seeking satisfactory outcomes for his clients using every legal and ethical means available, including investigation, motions, negotiation, and trial.

Mr. Connell's work on Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner testimony in rape cases has drawn national attention, including a feature by the CBS Evening News. The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Richmond Times-Dispatch, and many other newspapers have profiled Mr. Connell and his cases. In addition to the rape case which sparked a national reevaluation of expert testimony on sexual assault, Mr. Connell's high-profile cases have included defending the alleged arsonist in a Kingstowne, Virginia church fire and the daughter of slain scientist Robert Schwartz in Loudoun County, Virginia.

Mr. Connell received his Bachelor of Science degree in Communication from The Florida State University, where he was a national champion debater. He received his Juris Doctor degree from William & Mary School of Law in Williamsburg, Virginia. William & Mary conferred the Order of the Barrister, a litigation honors society, on Mr. Connell. In his final year at William & Mary, Mr. Connell served as Editor-in-Chief of the William & Mary Journal of Women & the Law. Mr. Connell clerked for the Honorable Rosemarie P. Annunziata at the Court of Appeals of Virginia. He has worked in both state and federal public defender's offices.

While actively engaged in the practice of law, Mr. Connell has been a prolific author. He has published articles in the American Criminal Law Review, Search & Seizure Law Report, and The Champion. He is co-editor of Cultural Issues in Criminal Defense, the leading treatise in its area.
